Discussion:
NetBSD for Web service on a Sparc 2

Now the the Sparc 2 here has PROM version 2.9, I'm again
preparing to net-install. Given that the system is to have a
simple Web server, which release is recommended? When I
tackled this originally, there was a mention that a previous
release included a Web server whereas it was an additional
component for 5. Should I aim for 5 or 4?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Hi Peter,

I feel as though I've missed something. You have an SS2 with a late rev
PROM (are you trying to use a weitek power-up! cpu?)

What's this machine to do ? Simple apache?

Best Wishes,
Al.

Just a plain old Sparc 2 with original cpu and 128 MiB
memory.

Be a Web server.

Simple apache?
Anything that can serve *.html and *.jpg will be OK.

I would go for NetBSD 5.1 and use the builtin /usr/libexec/httpd via inetd.

Then apache is major overkill, as is a supposedly-supported release.
My webserving consists of bozohttpd pointed at my anonymous FTP area
on sparc/basically-1.4T.
