... you installed libX11 from pkgsrc, ...
OK, I've removed all packages reported by pkg_info, except bochs.

sparc2# pkg_info
bochs-2.6.2nb2 IA32 and AMD64 PC emulator
You want the one from xbase.tgz, which is a binary set which did come
with the other binary sets you used to install NetBSD.
Only the essentials were installed from the nfs server.
***@dalton:/export/sparc2/root$ find . -type f -name 'x*' -print
***@dalton:/export/sparc2/root$ find . -type f -name 'X*' -print

According to
http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-6.1.4/sparc/INSTALL.html#Binary%20distribution%20sets
I've retrieved the xbase.tgz to / and "... run the tar -xzpf command from the root directory ( / ) ...".

Now,
sparc2# startx -display :0
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.666 does not exist
xinit: unable to run server "/usr/X11R7/bin/X": No such file or directory
Use the -- option, or make sure that /usr/X11R7/bin is in your path and
that "/usr/X11R7/bin/X" is a program or a link to the right type of server
for your display. Possible server names include:

Xorg Common X server for most displays
Xvfb Virtual frame buffer
Xfake kdrive-based virtual frame buffer
Xnest X server nested in a window on another X server
Xephyr kdrive-based nested X server
Xvnc X server accessed over VNC's RFB protocol
Xdmx Distributed Multi-head X server

xinit: server error
sparc2# ls -ld /usr/X11R7/bin/X*
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 27271 Sep 28 2013 /usr/X11R7/bin/Xmark
sparc2#

Still no X server.

http://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-x.html
"In NetBSD 5.0, the amd64, i386, macppc, shark, sgimips, and sparc64
ports use X.Org and the rest use XFree86."

What about NetBSD 6? Is XFree86 still advised for sparc?
It's shifted to X.Org?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

The server isn't in xbase.tgz, it is in xserver.tgz.

If you want to run the X11 server on the sparc you will need to download
and unpack xserver.tgz, xetc.tgz and xfont.tgz. If you want to compile
X11 programs yourself then also get xcomp.tgz.
